The Communication Workers of America is launching a new ad campaign aimed at scuttling a business deal by Verizon that the union says would harm competition and kill jobs.

“Elected officials and consumer advocates across the country have called on the FCC to reject this job-killing, monopoly-creating deal,” said Chris Shelton, District 1 Vice President of the CWA. “This secretive deal would destroy thousands of good jobs and leave millions of New Yorkers on the wrong side of the digital divide, but with the Governor’s leadership we can protect consumers and working families.”

The deal would essentially limit Verizon from expanding its fiber-optic service in the upstate region, a move that Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings called into question earlier this month.

The ads will be airing in most upstate TV markets and New York City cable television.

(YNN’s parent company, Time Warner Cable is a direct competitor to Verizon and party to the deal).
