A poll conducted by the Public Policy Polling Institute and commissioned by the AFL-CIO finds that Democratic House hopeful Sean Patrick Maloney is tied with Republican incumbent Rep. Nan Hayworth, with each garerning 43 percent of the vote.

The AFL-CIO endorsed Maloney earlier this year.

Fourteen percent of those surveyed said they were unsure who they would vote for, while 46 percent said they would back “someone new.”

“This poll confirms what we knew when we endorsed Sean Patrick Maloney for Congress – even without the powerful advantage of incumbency, Sean’s strong commitment to issues important to working families would resonate with Hudson Valley voters. The hardworking men and women of the 18th Congressional District want a representative that will fight to create good jobs and protect Medicare from right wing attacks, and Sean Patrick Maloney is far and away that candidate.”

The poll isn’t from a disinterested source in the outcome of the race and clearly the Maloney campaign wants some good numbers news after a Siena College survey found the Democrat trailing Hayworth by 13 percentage points.

The Maloney campaign was quick to point out that Larry Weissmann, the Working Families Party candidate, a placeholder during the Democratic primary, may have skewed the results since he’s leaving the race. Still, it’s not necessarily a guarantee that all 10 percent Weissmann received in the poll will transfer automatically to Maloney come November.
