As the ongoing Vito Lopez sexual harassment scandal continues, New York Republican Chairman Ed Cox is renewing his efforts to kick Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver from his leadership post and out of the Legislature.

Republicans today announced they were circulating a petition to oust Silver on a website called fireshelly.com:

The New York Republican Party says “enough is enough!” We do not think it is too much to ask for ethical leadership in Albany.

Please join us in sending a message to Speaker Silver by calling upon him to resign. We hope you will not only join us in this effort, but assist in spreading the message. We invite everyone in this state to join us in restoring integrity, dignity and transparency to the State Assembly.

Please sign our petition today, pass it on to your friends and families and tell disgraced NY Assembly Speaker Democrat Sheldon Silver to resign!

Silver, a Manhattan Democrat, has admitted that the more than $130,000 secret settlement to women who had accused Lopez of sexual harassment should not have been kept confidential. Today The Daily News reported that an additional $2,400 was used to hire an outside consulting firm to help with the settlement.

Naturally, it’s not a surprise that Silver has come under intense pressure from Republicans on the issue.

But the GOP clearly sees the scandal as an opening this election season, with Republican Senate candidate Wendy Long using Lopez scandal to knock Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.
