Gay bashing is apparently very in this primary season.

First Sen. Mark Grisanti was the target of a homophobic mailer – widely circulated, but never actually sent by a fringe GOP organization in Erie County.

(Grisanti, one of four Senate Republicans who voted “yes” on same-sex marriage last summer, is being challenged in tomorrow’s GOP primary by attorney Kevin Stocker).

Now NYC Councilman Eric Ulrich is being hit in a mailer sent by his GOP primary opponent, attorney Juan Reyes, for being a “gay-friendly, cosmopolitan Republican who mocked religious Americans.”

The mailer accuses Ulrich and his wife of being “frequent dinner companions” of an openly-gay Democratic councilman (a reference to another member of the Queens delegation, Jimmy Van Bramer), and “cozying up” to New York City Council Speaker Chris Quinn, who is the first woman and first lesbian to hold her leadership post.

In addition, the mailer “outs” Ulrich’s chief of staff and another staffer – without naming names – saying both are “openly gay.”

All this is an attempt to cast Ulrich, who is running with conservative support, as a “flip-flopping” liberal.

The front of the mailer also suggests Ulrich, 27, is too immature to be a senator, noting he made “rude,” “vulgar” and “inappropriate” comments (on Twitter) about former Sen. Bob Dole’s “anatomy” after Dole announced his support for Reyes.

It’s worth noting that Reyes used to work for the Giuliani administration.

The former mayor has said he believes marriage should only be between one man and one woman.

But he has gay friends – memorably living with a gay couple during his divorce from his second wife, Donna Hanover – and also once said the GOP should “move on” from the divisive issue of same-sex marriage and get out of people’s bedrooms.

Ulrich told the Daily News, which first reported the mailer, that he found it “disgraceful.”

Whoever wins tomorrow’s primary will face off against Democratic Sen. Joe Addabbo in November. Ulrich has the support of the Senate Republicans. Reyes is backed by the Queens GOP, which has been feuding with Ulrich for several years now.
