State Republican Party Chairman and Rep. Bob Turner released statements within minutes of each other decrying the New York Democrats’ decision to keep Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver as their convention delegation leader and knocking Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in the procures.

Turner said Silver remaining the face of the delegation “defies belief”

“Speaker Silver’s role as head of the New York delegation at the Democratic National Convention is an affront to the people of New York State. We have just learned that Mr. Silver tried to cover up a third — at least — incident of sexual abuse of young women in state government, yet there he sits in Charlotte as the chief representative of the New York Democratic Party. The scene defies belief.”

Cox, meanwhile, slammed Gillibrand for backing Silver in the scandal. Silver approved a settlement of more than $100,000 to alleged victims of Lopez, but has said he since regrets keeping the agreement a secret.

Gillibrand told reporters this morning that the speaker should remain the face of the delegation and give the roll call at the convention later today.

“It is deeply disappointing that New York Democrats in Charlotte, like U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, have remained utterly silent about the attempted sexual assault cover-ups perpetrated by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. Indeed, Mr. Silver is serving as the head of the New York delegation at the Democratic National Convention, without a peep from Ms. Gillibrand or her fellow delegates. That is an embarrassment to our state.
