AG Eric Schneiderman has a new plan to shine some light on who is trying to influence elections in New York and to rid the system of what he calls “dark money.”

He wants nonprofits known by their IRS classification – 501(c)4 – that spend more than $10,000 on state and local elections or ballot measures to reveal who is giving them their cash.

Schneiderman explains how these supposed “social welfare” organizations have hijacked the system by circumventing donor disclosure rules, and why he thinks transparency is key to fair elections.
