The mayoral campaign of Public Advocate Bill de Blasio is circulating an online petition this morning to pressure former Rep. Anthony Weiner to leave the race.

The petition comes less than 24 hours after it was revealed Weiner, who resigned in disgrace for sending explicit photos to women over the Internet, had resumed sexting after his resignation from Congress under the name “Carlos Danger.”

In an email appeal to supporters that landed in inboxes shortly before 7 a.m., de Blasio writes the serious issues at stake in the campaign such as affordable housing and stop and frisk, are being overshadowed by the Weiner “sideshow.”

“You deserve to know how we would use the power of the office to make life better for people in all neighborhoods. But the sideshows of this election have gotten in the way of the debate we should be having about the future of our City.

Enough is enough.

Stand with me now by demanding that Anthony Weiner withdraw from this race, for the good of the city that I know he loves as much as all of us. You can automatically add your name to our petition — so we can have a serious debate — by clicking the link below.

The petition can be found here.

Weiner at yesterday’s extraordinary news conference gave no indication he will drop out of the race.
