Ray Kelly! Maureen Dowd! Stop and frisk and Cynthia McCray!

It’s barely the early afternoon, but sharp elbows are already being thrown in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor between candidates Christine Quinn and Bill de Blasio.

The day started off with a “web ad” that is essentially a supercut of TV news discussing Quinn’s support for New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Things took a turn when a Maureen Dowd column in The Times included a quote critical of McCray, who was asked why she thinks Quinn is not accessible to women: “She’s not accessible. She’s not the kind of person I feel I can go up to and talk to about issues like taking care of children at a young age and paid sick leave.”

Needless to say, the Quinn campaign didn’t like this, unloading double-barrel blasts at de Blasio’s campaign. Assemblywoman Deborah Glick suggested the quote had a whiff of homophobia to it.

The de Blasio campaign fired back, saying McCray had been misquoted.

“Chirlane McCray was misquoted,” said campaign manager Bill Hyers. “As the transcript makes clear, her actual comments were about Speaker Quinn’s unwillingness to listen to the people on education, and paid sick leave, and any suggestion otherwise is disingenuous and absurd.”

Dowd’s column was then updated to include the front end of the quote:

“Well I am a woman, and she is not speaking to the issues I care about and I think a lot of women feel the same way. I don’t see her speaking to the concerns of women who have to take care of children at a young age or send them to school and after school, paid sick days, workplace, she is not speaking to any of those issues. What can I say? And she is not accessible, she is not the kind of person who you can talk to and go up to and have a conversation with about those things, and I suspect that other women feel the same thing I’m feeling.”

Issue solved? No. Quinn’s campaign found the new context of the quote to be basically the same as the old context.

NY1 is hosting a debate tonight for the Democratic candidates. It should bwe a fun one.
