Suffolk County Conservative Party Chairman Ed Walsh today endorsed Congressional candidate Lee Zeldin this morning, pointing to both his military service and “moral character.”

“Lee Zeldin is a family man, a military officer and a New York State Senator who is a great choice to represent the 1st Congressional District,” Walsh said in a statement released by the Zeldin campaign. “He has successfully fought for our taxpayers, veterans, sportsmen, and so many Long Island families. The best way for us to change the culture in Washington is for us to change the type of people we send there.”

Zeldin last week announced he would run for the seat held by Democratic Rep. Tim Bishop, a second attempt after falling short in 2008.

In addition to the support from the influential third party, Zeldin has the support of the GOP establishment on the state and local level.

The quick endorsements, along with the NRCC touting Zeldin early on, seems geared toward nudging former SEC prosecutor George Demos out of the race, who has already loaned his campaign $1 million.

The full Walsh statement after the jump.

Lee Zeldin is a family man, a military officer and a New York State Senator who is a great choice to represent the 1st Congressional District. He has successfully fought for our taxpayers, veterans, sportsmen, and so many Long Island families. The best way for us to change the culture in Washington is for us to change the type of people we send there. Senator Zeldin has the moral character, work ethic and proven track record of representing the taxpayer which is something we just don’t see enough of in Washington. As Suffolk County Conservative Party Chairman, I stand with Lee Zeldin and will work hard to help elect Lee Zeldin in the First Congressional District because Lee is a principled, honorable hard worker who will not let us down. It’s time to send a message to Washington that the end of fiscal insanity and D.C. dysfunction is coming and electing Lee Zeldin is our first step in that direction.
