Long Island Democratic Rep. Steve Israel has a Republican challenger: Grant Lally a Mineola attorney who has worked on the Bush and McCain presidential campaigns.

Lally. of course, isn’t a stranger to running for elected office before. He challenged Democratic Rep. Gary Ackerman in both 1994 and 1996.

Lally worked on the 2000 recount effort on behalf of George W. Bush and is a veteran of Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential effort.

In a statement, Lally knocked Israel for the federal health care law as well his work as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman.

“It is time for a change in the 3rd Congressional District. America is a great and good country, and deserves great leadership. In an increasingly competitive world, we need a government dedicated to lower taxes, business-friendly regulations, excellent schools, and world-class health care if we are going to grow and succeed as a nation. Those are my principles and my pledge to my neighbors in the North Shore 3rd Congressional District,” Lally said in a statement.
