As Republican candidate for governor Rob Astorino pushed earlier today Gov. Andrew Cuomo to show Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver the door, the governor reiterated he doesn’t have the power to do so.

“Mr. Silver is elected by the Assembly and it’s up to the Assembly to choose who he is,” Cuomo said after a campaign rally in western New York alongside former Rep. Kathy Hochul, his running mate. “We’ve had this conversation many times before.”

When a reporter pointed out that Cuomo could work his legislative magic to pressure lawmakers to dump Silver as their leader, Cuomo demurred.

“I could become an Assembly and then I could have a vote, but that’s up to the Assembly,” he said.

Astorino’s latest call for Silver to resign came after The New York Times debunked a claim his office made that a different “Sheldon Silver” helped block an affordable housing project in favor of commercial development in New York City.
