Democratic former mayor of Binghamton Matt Ryan on Wednesday endorsed Zephyr Teachout for governor calling her a “real alternative” to incumbent Andrew Cuomo.

Ryan, who toyed with running for state Senate in 2012 against incumbent Republican Sen. Tom Libous, is a strident opponent of hydrofracking.

“We need to get the message out far and wide that we as Democrats in this State have in Zephyr Teachout a real alternative, a real antidote, a real choice to politics as usual in Albany,” Ryan said in his endorsement statement. “We as Democrats in New York have the opportunity of a lifetime to send a message that will reverberate across our nation that we the people will no longer tolerate insulated corrupt government here in New York State or anywhere.”

Teachout, an opponent of hydrofracking as well, said she was “extremely honored” to have Ryan’s support.

New York is under a defacto fracking moratorium, with the state Department of Health reviewing the impact the natural-gas extraction process has on human health.
