Bronx Democratic Assemblyman Carl Heastie has retained two outside consultants who are familiar faces for Albany: Risa Heller and Eric Soufer.

Heller is a former spokeswoman for Gov. David Paterson and U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, who runs her own firm, Risa Heller Communications.

Soufer is a former spokesman for Independent Democratic Conference Leader Jeff Klein and joined Heller’s firm last year.

Erica Orden of the Wall Street Journal first reported their hiring, which was independently confirmed.

The hiring of Soufer of Heller comes as Heastie is considered one of the potential candidates to replace Speaker Sheldon Silver, who will be vacating the top post in the Assembly by Monday.

Both consultants have relationships with the Capitol press corps and could potentially help guide Heastie, known for being a tight-lipped figure of few words at the Capitol, through the process of being elected speaker.

Assembly Majority Leader Joe Morelle is due to become the acting speaking until Feb. 10, when an election for a permanent successor is held.
