A 43-year-old official in Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration is in critical condition after he was shot in the head early Monday morning.

Carey Gabay, a first deputy general counsel at Empire State Development and a former assistant counsel to the governor, was taken to Kings County Hospital. The shooting took pale at Bedford Avenue and Sullivan Place at 3:40 a.m. while Gabay was in the middle of a crows.

Gabay joined the administration in 2011 and is a Harvard graduate.

In a statement, Cuomo called him a “kind-hearted man.”

“Carey is a friend to all who have the pleasure of meeting him. I ask that New Yorkers join us by keeping him, his wife Trenelle and his family in their prayers at this time,” Cuomo said in the statement. “This tragic shooting – this one by another seemingly random bullet – is the latest heartbreaking reminder that the crime of gun violence must stop. Enough young, innocent people have died, and it must stop now.”
