From the Morning Memo:

In a sign Republicans on the national level are already pivoting to the general election in the 19th congressional district, the National Republican Congressional Committee on Tuesday knocked Democratic candidate Zephyr Teachout over her support for Bernie Sanders in the presidential race.

In a statement from NRCC spokesman Chris Pack, Teachout is knocked as a “carpetbagger” who backs the “Sanders-Teachout plan” to hike taxes.

“Hudson Valley voters should be terrified about the Sanders-Teachout plan to raise taxes by $13.6 trillion over the next decade, including a $4,700 annual tax hike on middle class families. Voters in New York’s 19thDistrict deserve better than a carpetbagger from Brooklyn moving to town to advocate for the Bernie Sanders agenda that will tank our economy.”

The carpetbagger charge may stick more than the Sanders jibe, given the Vermont senator’s popularity with Democrats upstate, where he fared well generally over Hillary Clinton in last month’s presidential primary.

In 2014, Rep. Chris Gibson knocked his Democratic opponent, Sean Eldridge, for moving into the area just before launching a bid for his congressional seat. Gibson, who retires later this year from Congress, handily won the race.
