From the Morning Memo:

Offenses against first responders such as police, firefighters and emergency medical services personnel would be designated a hate crime, according to a bill to be considered on Tuesday in the Senate.

The measure is backed by Republican Sen. Fred Akshar of the Southern Tier. Akshar is a former Broome County under sheriff before his election to the chamber.

The bill coincides with the annual Police Officers’ Memorial Remembrance Ceremony in Albany. The Division of Criminal Justices Services plans to honor 40 law enforcement personnel who have died.
