Senate Minority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins in a statement Thursday called for an independent investigation of Bronx Democrat Jeff Klein in the wake of a sexual misconduct allegation made against him by a former staffer.

In her statement, Stewart-Cousins said the investigation should be conduct “outside the Senate.”

“These allegations are extremely disturbing. Too many women are discouraged from coming forward because they fear not being believed and attacked,” she said. “We need to confront sexual assault, harassment and inappropriate workplace behavior head-on and make it clear that it is not acceptable. There needs to be an immediate independent investigation outside the Senate.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday night in a statement also called for an independent investigation of Klein.

Several members of Klein’s eight-member bloc, the Independent Democratic Conference, sit on the Senate Ethics Committee, sit on the panel, including Sens. David Carlucci, Diane Savino and David Valesky.

Savino in a phone conference call with Klein told reporters the allegation made against him is not true.

At the same time, Carlucci and Valesky signed on to a statement in support of Klein that was released Wednesday evening.
