CaptainFrom the Morning Memo:

You can alter the old Harry Truman saying: If you want a friend in Albany, get a dog.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday unveiled the newest member of his administration: A 14-week-old puppy named Captain, a mix he said of “Siberian and Shepherd and maybe some Malamute in him.”

The dog was first seen publicly at a reception for the New York Conference of Mayors at the Executive Mansion on Monday night, with a photo first tweeted out by Honeoye Falls Mayor Rick Milne.

Cuomo’s office later tweeted a full video of the puppy crawling in the governor’s arms in front of the crowd and released a photo.

“This was the idea of my daughters, who had to have a puppy, had to have a puppy,” Cuomo said. “The daughters are nowhere to be found now.”

Cuomo also shared with the mayors the challenges of housebreaking a young dog, noting Captain “will only urinate indoors.”

Having a dog will likely soften the image of a governor who has a reputation for being a hard-charging executive who is not especially known for posing with puppies.

As for the dog’s name, Cuomo said he wanted to give him something more on-brand, but was overruled.

“I wanted to name him Excelsior,” Cuomo said, “but I was outvoted by my daughters.”
