State lawmakers will interview potential candidates for attorney general starting next Tuesday and Wednesday, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie’s office announced this afternoon.

The interviews will be conducted by Republicans and Democrats from the Senate and Assembly, with minority conferences also having representatives on the panel.

Resumes and a cover letter are due to the speaker’s legislative counsel, Kathleen O’Keefe, by 5 p.m. on Friday.

This puts the interviews on a timetable ahead of the state party conventions, which begin the following week starting May 22.

“At the interview, candidates will be given the opportunity to publicly discuss their qualifications and answer questions from select members of the Legislature,” Heasite’s office said.

Heastie told reporters earlier today that Acting Attorney General Barbara Underwood would be invited to an interview.
