From the Morning Memo:

The Working Families Party on Thursday is set to announce its endorsement of Karen Smythe, the Democratic challenger to Republican Sen. Sue Serino in the Hudson Valley’s 41st Senate district.

“Hudson Valley families and businesses are struggling to cope with high taxes, and the Republican tax plan is only making our problems worse,” Smythe said.

“We need real leadership from our state government, and a State Senator who will work for our community, and stand up for our values. I am honored to be supported by the Working Families Party, and I look forward to finally reforming state government and giving Hudson Valley residents the representation they deserve in Albany.”

The 41st Senate district, which includes the Poughkeepsie area, has been considered a potential battleground area for the last several election cycles given its brief representation by Democrat Terry Gipson for a two-year term. Serino unseated Gipson in 014 and beat him again during her re-election bid in 2016.

“Hudson Valley families deserve a Senator who will ensure our schools are fully funded and that all New Yorkers have access to fair paying jobs, high-quality health care, and communities safe from gun violence,” said Phil Leber, the Hudson Region political director for the WFP. “Karen Smythe understands the issues facing our communities and she will listen to Hudson Valley families and take action on our priorities.”
