U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand on Monday endorsed Rep. Joe Crowley in his re-election bid.

The endorsement for Crowley comes as he faces a primary later this month from 28-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“With our state and our country facing constant threats from the Trump administration, Joe Crowley is on the frontlines fighting for all New Yorkers,” Gillibrand said. “A progressive leader, Joe and I have worked together to protect immigrant communities, fought to raise the minimum wage, and ensure that health care is a right for all Americans. We need Joe fighting for Queens and the Bronx in Congress.”

Gillibrand has sought to encourage women to run for and win elected office. But Crowley has lined up a series of endorsements ahead of the June 26 primary.

Crowley, a Queens power broker and potential successor to Rep. Nancy Pelosi as the Democratic House leader, was previously endorsed by Planned Parenthood Action Fund, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly.
