Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday formally scheduled Nov. 6 as the special election to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Democratic Rep. Louise Slaughter earlier this year, the same day as the general election.

Scheduling the special election to coincide with the general election will allow the winner to take office immediately and fill out the remainder of Slaughter’s term in Congress, rather than be sworn in at the start of the new year on Jan. 1.

Democratic Assemblyman Joe Morelle faces Republican James Maxxwell in the race for the Rochester-area House district.
