Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is beginning 2014 with $2.9 million in cash on hand in his re-election campaign account, according to his finance report filed with the state Board of Elections.

Silver, who reported his campaign filing in November, did little fundraising in the last several weeks, the report shows.

However, he did pay Stu Loeser’s PR consulting firm $28,000. Loeser was hired in 2012 to help Silver respond to press inquiries surrounding the Vito Lopez sexual harassment scandal.

He later would represent Silver to answer questions regarding the arrest of Willie Rapfogel, the former head of the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty who is married to Judy Rapfogel, a top aide to the speaker.

Earlier this week, Senate GOP Leader Dean Skelos reported $2.3 million in cash on hand, while IDC Leader Jeff Klein reported $1.6 million.
