Democratic Sen. Tim Kennedy, faced a stiff primary challenge from Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant, was endorsed by a slew of labor unions from across the state as well as regional groups.

Kennedy, a Buffalo lawmaker, was endorsed by the AFL-CIO, New York State Troopers PBA, the Communications Workers of America and CSEA, the state’s largest public workers union.

“I’ve long fought to ensure the voices of Western New York’s working men and women are heard in the State Capitol, and I’m honored to have earned their support,” Kennedy said in a statement. “The fights I take on in the State Capitol are their fights. It’s their concerns that I work hard to address each day. Western New York’s hardworking families have my word: as long as I’m their state senator, I’ll keep fighting for them every single day.”

The endorsements from labor come after Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz endorsed Grant in next month’s primary over Kennedy.
