fiorina NARAL Pro-Choice New York on Tuesday criticized Westchester County Republicans for holding a fundraising dinner later this evening that is scheduled to include GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina as its keynote speaker.

“The Westchester County GOP’s decision to feature Carly Fiorina at their fundraising dinner tonight reveals how distinctly out of touch New York’s Republican leadership is with the voters they represent,” said NARAL’s Andrea Miller. “The embrace by local Republican leaders – including Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino – of a presidential candidate who holds among the most extreme views within the GOP field on a woman’s right to choose sends a deeply troubling message.”

In particular, Miller noted Fiorina’s push to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision as well as “inflammatory rhetoric to describe abortion.”

The statement portends an election season that will likely once again include a broader fight over abortion and reproductive rights in New York, which was a key platform plank of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s re-election.

A measure that was aimed at codifying the Roe v. Wade decision in state law ultimately stalled in he Legislature.

“As the 2016 election cycle gears up, this should serve as a powerful and frightening reminder that a vocal minority of anti-choice extremists continues to threaten to undermine a woman’s right to choose, even in a state where support for abortion rights and access is both overwhelming and bi-partisan. This re-emergence of extremism in New York State politics proves that it is imperative that we enshrine protections for safe, legal abortion care now in our state laws, so that it endures for generations.”

Tickets to the Westchester event range cost $300 and benefit the county Republican committee.
