U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand on Thursday sent a fundraising email for Zephyr Teachout, the Democratic candidate for Congress in the 19th congressional and the 2014 primary challenger to Gov. Andrew CUmoo.

Gillibrand, the Democratic junior senator in New York, is the first statewide elected official to endorse Teachout’s campaign for the Hudson Valley congressional district.

The fundraising email presents an interesting move for Gillibrand, who has never had much of an alliance with Cuomo.

Gillibrand has sought to elect more women to federal office, including this cycle Democrat Colleen Deacon in a central New York congressional district.

“I can tell you one of my favorite things about Zephyr: She’s worked for years to raise the voices of women in politics,” Gillibrand said in the email. “She’s co-organized events to encourage New York women and teachers to run for office. She’s volunteered for Girls on the Run. She’s been a mentor for young women almost her entire life — pushing for more women in business and politics.”

Teachout faces Will Yandik in a Democratic primary in June, as well as John Patrick Kehoe.

The 19th congressional district is being vacated by Rep. Chris Gibson, a Republican considering a run for governor in 2018.
