From the Morning Memo:

Democratic activist and fundraiser Bill Samuels will host a fundraiser on Monday for congressional candidate Zephyr Teachout, with tickets going as high as $2,700.

The event will feature House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, as a special guest, according to an invitation obtained by Capital Tonight.

Samuels took note of Teachout’s insurgent bid for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2014 against incumbent Andrew Cuomo.

“I was proud to help Zephyr when she ran a grassroots campaign in 2014 taking on Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary for Governor of New York,” Samuels wrote in an email with the invitation. “She ended up receiving an impressive 34% of the vote, a remarkable performance for a first-time candidate, and in so doing laid the foundation for a brilliant career in public service.”

Samuels has been a staunch Cuomo critic over the years, urging him to take more liberal stances on key policy issues, including campaign finance reform.

Teachout herself has been a staunch advocate for campaign finance law changes and has railed against the influence of money in politics.

In the email from Samuels, campaign finance reform isn’t mentioned, but he does tout her race in the Hudson Valley as an important battleground, as well as her endorsements from a range of unions as well as U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.

“I am confident that once you meet Zephyr you’ll be as excited about her candidacy as I am,” he wrote. “She is a dynamic and impressive leader and will be a tremendous progressive voice both for the people of her district and all New Yorkers.”

Teachout is running for the congressional seat being vacated by Republican Rep. Chris Gibson. She faces Republican John Faso, a former Assembly minority leader and 2006 nominee for governor, in the November general election.
