From the Morning Memo:

Newly declared Democratic congressional hopeful Gareth Rhodes in an interview with Spectrum News on Monday said he’s his own man in the race for the 19th district.

Rhodes is a former aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has feuded with Rep. John Faso over a provision in the Republican-backed American Health Care Act that would shift the burden of Medicaid spending from county governments to the state.

Rhodes declared this week he’s taking on Faso in the battleground Hudson Valley race.

“This my idea to run. This is my community,” he said. “This is where I am from. I’m going to be here for my community.”

Rhodes did let Cuomo’s office know he was eyeing a bid for the district, but insisted Cuomo didn’t ask him to run.

“This is my race, this is my idea, this is hope and plan to stand up and fight for my community,” he said.
