Democratic Westchester County executive candidate George Latimer has been endorsed by U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer in his bid to unseat Republican incumbent Rob Astorino.

“Born and raised in Westchester, George Latimer has dedicated his life to public service and fighting for the people of Westchester county,” said Schumer, the Senate minority leader.

“As a county legislator and NYS Senator, George was a warrior for middle-class families and a champion for fiscal responsibility; he’s been a leader in the fight for honest government; and he’s working to combat the opioid crisis plaguing our communities. Westchester needs a leader who will protect hard-earned taxpayer dollars, prioritize critical infrastructure projects and help spur the local economy. I am pleased to endorse George Latimer for Westchester County Executive.”

Latimer, a state senator, praised Schumer as a role model for pushing back on President Donald Trump’s policies.

“His work on behalf of New York’s families to protect health care, fight for women, protect our environment, and support common sense gun laws is inspiring, and I look forward to continuing to work together on the issues that matter to Westchester residents,” said Latimer.

Astorino, meanwhile, was endorsed this weekend by the Affiliated Police Associations of Westchester County, which represents 53 police benevolent associations.

“I couldn’t be prouder than to have the endorsement of so many officers who keep Westchester families safe every day and every night,” Astorino said.

“These men and women put their lives on the line for us, and their support means the world to me. I will continue to support them in every way I can as County Executive, including by holding the line on taxes to make Westchester more affordable to hardworking, middle-class families who form the backbone of this county.”
