defranfornewyorkDeputy Senate Majority Leader John DeFrancisco has formed a campaign committee ahead of an expected announcement on Tuesday that he will run for governor.

A filing with the state Board of Elections shows the Syracuse Republican formed the committee, DeFrancisco for New York, on Monday.

DeFrancisco’s entry into the race makes him the third Republican to seek the nomination to challenge incumbent Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He will join Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb and former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra. Cuomo, a Democrat, is seeking a third term this year.

The filing also comes after DeFrancisco spoke at the annual gathering of the state Conservative Party in Albany and criticized Cuomo’s approach on economic development.
