The politically influential labor union 1199SEIU on Monday endorsed Sen. Marisol Alcantara’s re-election campaign.

Alcantara represents the 31st Senate district in Manhattan and faces former Councilman Robert Jackson in the September primary.

“I am extremely humbled and grateful to have received the endorsement of 1199SEIU as its members fight to achieve good health care and quality jobs for all,” Alcantara said. “It is especially rewarding to receive 1199’s endorsement as the union not only fights for its members in hospitals, nursing homes, homecare programs, clinics and pharmacies, but also strives and leads to lift workers everywhere – as it has done with the Fight for $15 effort.”

Alcantara is a former member of the now-dissolved Independent Democratic Conference who drew a primary challenge in part based on her membership in the conference. The IDC disbanded in April and merged with the mainline Democratic conference in April.

“Senator Marisol Alcántara has shown she shares our progressive values,” said the union’s political director Gabby Seay. “She has always stood up for all workers and everything we believe in. 1199SEIU is proud to stand with the only Latina in the entire state senate for her re-election bid.”
