Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told a group of advocates she supports public financing for state campaigns in New York, according to a video released Tuesday by Make the Road New York.

The endorsement of the public financing provision by Ocasio-Cortez, a touchstone of the progressive movement nationally and in New York, is a boost for supporters of the measure just as the state budget negotiations being to heat up in Albany.

“Here in New York, someone who wants to run for State Senate or State Assembly can accept more corporate donations than a member of Congress at the federal level,” she said in the video. “I support campaign finance reform at the state level and at the federal level.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo included public financing in his budget proposal as well as lower caps on donation limits for statewide campaigns and those running for the Legislature.
