From the Morning Memo:

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone on Monday will launch an effort to restore funding cuts to a $3.7 million veterans peer support program in the state budget.

The program is meant to aid veterans who suffer from the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and Traumatic Brain injury.

Initially created by then-Sen. Lee Zeldin in the 2012-13 state budget as a pilot program, it has since expanded to 23 other counties in the state.

Part of the campaign to restore funding includes a kick-off event on Friday with Sen. John Brooks and Assemblyman Steve Stern at a VFW Hall. Suffolk County has the highest veterans population in the state.

Bellone also plans to travel to other parts of the state, including the Hudson Valley and western New York, to call attention to the funding restoration.
